The word perfume is derived from the Latin words "per fumum", meaning "through the smoke".

The first perfume maker on record was a woman chemist named Tapputi. Stories of the inventor of perfume have been found on a clay tablet from Babylonia, suggesting that perfume was invented by Tapputi sometime during the second millennium BC.

Fragrance was of great importance in Egyptian high society. In fact, Egyptian mythology even notes the god Nefertem as being the lord of perfume. He is often depicted carrying water lilies, which were a common ingredient in ancient perfume.

It’s said that great Egyptian leaders like Queen Cleopatra and Queen Hatshepsut used fragrances to scent their bodies, quarters, baths and even took perfume with them to the grave.

The 16th century saw the popularity of perfume explode in France, especially among the upper classes and nobles. With help from “the perfume court,” the court of Louis XV, everything got perfumed: furniture, gloves, and other clothing. 

Today Egypt is still a major trading center for the perfume industry.

What's the difference between perfume oils and perfume?
Please do not confuse these perfume oils with cologne or essential oil. Pure perfume flower oils are far more sophisticated than perfume with fillers. Never offensive or overpowering, beautifully long lasting and balanced.
